Architecture – old and new in perfect harmony

Year 2012 – 2015
Team Kjaer & Richter A/S
Engineer: Henry Jensen A/S
Landscape: WAD
The extension to CLAY – Museum of Ceramic Art Denmark encompasses 1.500 m² of newbuilding plus 1.000 m² of refurbishment and conversion of existing listed buildings at Kongebroskoven in Middelfart.
The winning proposal is for an underground extension of the existing museum, in which the structure, beneath the terrain to the south, is linked with the existing side wing via an interior staircase and elevator, while the slope of the terrain towards the sea allows the exhibition building to appear in the park landscape. The design idiom is simple and sculptural, and seeks to create a harmonious parity of scale with the surrounding historic buildings.
