Cultural Mirrors – when culture, identity and hope meet at CLAY

28 October – 2 November 2025

Cultural Mirrors provides a powerful and moving insight into life as an asylum seeker in Denmark, seen through art, culture and mirror images. The exhibition has been created by residents at the Red Cross asylum centre in Jelling, where people from more than 15 different countries have worked with ceramic mirror frames to express their personal and cultural stories.

Behind each frame lie stories of identity, belonging and dreams for the future – and for many of the participants, uncertainty, as the asylum centre in Jelling is facing closure.

The exhibited works function as cultural mirrors – both literally and symbolically. Each frame represents something significant from the creator’s background, and the audience is invited to reflect on the works and consider what culture and identity mean in their own lives.

The exhibition is an initiative of the Red Cross asylum centre in Jelling, inspired by a visit to the CLAY Ceramic Museum, which is hosting the exhibition. The result is personal and visual narratives that show how art can create reflection, understanding and community across cultures.
